At any age, shedding the fat has many far-reaching benefits to your health

There’s good news about heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Even though they are the leading causes of death, they happen to be among the most preventable health problems, and the battle begins by dropping excess fat.

Obesity beats chronic health conditions beginning in childhood, when Type II diabetes, respiratory problems, and depression can develop with excess weight. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 1 in 5 Illinois children is obese – making the U.S. tenth in the country for childhood obesity. Illinois is one of only two states to mandate physical education classes through 12th grade. When obesity- related health issues carry over into adulthood, additional problems arise, stroke, sleep apnea, gallstones, types of cancer, or heart disease. Sustained build-up of fatty tissue leads to high blood pressure as well as worn-down joints and osteoarthritis.

It’s never too early to pursue a healthy weight. Throughout childhood, regular exercise and a diet rich in whole grains, lean protein, and nutrients stimulate lifelong health. In adults, one of the most potent effects of exercise is

reduction of cortisol, a hormone that builds up fat around the abdomen and contributes to stress. Exercise also boosts the immune system.

A recent study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that moderate exercise decreased the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections by nearly thirty percent. Additionally, while type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes strikes 7.8% of Americans, a 2008 study by Evidence Based Medicine showed that proper nutrition and exercise can delay the disease. Even for those already diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, resistance and aerobic training can greatly improve glycemic function.

So what’s the first step to tackling that extra weight? Visit your physician for guidance and advice. Take advantage of all of your athletic club’s weight loss support. The more readily a new diet and exercise program fit into your life, the more likely you are to keep them there.

If you struggle with self-motivating, consider personal training and nutritional counselling for direction, motivation, goal-setting, and helpful pointers. After an in-depth consultation, a certified trainer can help you develop an approach uniquely suited to your needs. Small steps mean a big pay-off – and not just on the scale.

Fitness Formula Clubs go beyond what you would expect from a Chicago gym .
